Her father died when she was nine, and her mother raised her. Sonia graduated from Princeton University and received her Juris Doctor from Yale Law Schoo. Sonia was nominated to the U.S. District Court of New York. In 2009, Sonia was nominated and confirmed to the Supreme Court. She is the first woman of color, first Hispanic, and first Latina Supreme Court Justice While on the Court.
